Postdoctoral opportunity for “Seaweed Cultivation Trials” project in Nova Scotia
The main objective of this project is to provide the foundation for a large scale experimental project to grow seaweeds in Nova Scotia. This project aims to identify and bring together the various players interested in developing a seaweed industry in Nova Scotia and get all the financial and logistics resources in place to do a full scale kelp growth trial with shellfish farmers for the 1st seeded line deployment in fall 2017.
In partnership with the shellfish growers, aquaculture sites will be visited and assessed for various environmental parameters to select the most appropriate sites for the kelp growth trials and optimize the chances of success. Experimental protocols will be developed in order to gather meaningful scientific information about kelp growth and biomass produced during the trials. Shellfish grower partners will be given information and training about kelp cultivation and they will have scientific support all along the kelp growth trials on their leases.
This project will put in place all the components necessary for large scale kelp growth trials in Nova Scotia which is the first step for diversifying and developing the aquaculture industry in the province.
The incumbent would ideally be based in Halifax, but it is open to discussion. This position is a great opportunity to work directly with the aquaculture industry and contribute to the development of a new aquaculture industry in Nova Scotia.
